And It’s All FREE!

For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.  (Gal. 5:1)

My grandson started kindergarten a couple of weeks ago.  A lot has changed in the 25+ years since my kids started school … especially the lunchroom.  Sammy can take the lunch special of the day, or choose “a la carte” items.  As for payment, lunch money is a thing of the past.  My daughter and son-in-law have cafeteria apps on their iPhones, and they transfer money into Sammy’s lunch account from their savings.  The lunch ladies scan a badge he has and Sammy’s lunch account is debited.

It takes Sammy two days to find the ice cream dessert option.  He is jazzed.  His mom Facetime’d us that night and Sammy can’t wait to tell us.  He says to his grandmother, “Mamaw, I got ice cream with my lunch today.  And it’s all FREE!”

Friends, it is a microcosm of our lives of faith.  We walk through our days as children of God.  And God provides a feast of blessings for us.  Everything from the majesty of nature … to the gift companions for the journey … to the privilege of meaningful work and service … to the miracle of minds that can appreciate music, words and visual beauty … and yes, to the food placed on our table, whether it comes from the market or the cafeteria a la carte line.  All of it … everything … a gift from God’s providential hand.  And it’s all FREE!

Have you taken a moment to thank God today, for the blessings in your life?  Might not be a bad idea.  Prayer is always a pretty good vehicle for gratitude, right?
