And Herodias had a grudge against him [John the Baptist], and wanted to kill
him. But she could not, for Herod feared John.–Mark 6: 19-20
Preparing for Worship
Self-consciousness and guilt are useless unless they drive us to God.
Herod and his wife prove it. They knew right from wrong, as we do. Herod assuaged his guilt by engaging in religious activity. Herodias tried to silence the voice of condemnation by removing the head of John the Baptist. Neither found a permanent solution because none exists, apart from becoming conscious of God’s gift of grace given through Jesus Christ.
Sunday’s Worship Music
Our Hymn of the Day at the traditional services is “Faith of our Fathers”. Just as John’s ministry paved the way for Jesus’ ministry, so the faith of our ancestors has paved the way for ours. In today’s hymn we declare our undying allegiance to the mission of God in the world.
The worship song at the New Day Praise service this week is “One Name”. The lyrics remind us that we are saved by God alone. Through our baptism, we are filled with the Holy Spirit and made free by the sacrifice of Jesus.
Preaching Theme
What is your level of consciousness?
For Further Reflection
What are you feeling self-conscious or guilty about? What voice of condemnation do you struggle to silence? Have you found a permanent solution? The self will remind you of sins you’ve already confessed and had forgiven by God. The gospel reminds us of God’s grace and mercy, every time.
