Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the Sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” (Mk. 2:27-28)
Sabbath observance is constituted repeatedly in the Bible – prohibiting us from gathering food, chopping or kindling wood, traveling, no yard work, no tying or untying your clothing. In fact, the only time you should actually consider “working” is when you need to intervene on behalf of someone else’s life. If life is in danger –than the rules go out the window. Jesus changed the narrative to rule following. We need to constantly negotiate what man-made rules keep us from observing the Sabbath in order to love our God and love our neighbor.
Preaching Question:
Are you a rule follower?
For further reflection:
What does Sabbath keeping mean to you?
How do you keep the Sabbath?
What man-made rules keep you from loving God and loving neighbor?
What rules can be broken in order to follow Christ?
