How much faith does a person need?

The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” (Luke 17:6)

According to the Gospel of Luke, the ones closest to Jesus believe they need more. “Increase our faith!” they plead.

When it comes to faith, Jesus suggests that size doesn’t matter, and it leaves us wondering our sermon question for the day.

Preaching Question

What is faith?

The word faith has a lot of meanings. It can refer to trust, confidence and commitment (to name just a few). We have faith in all sorts of things in our life including the faith that your car will start, a faith in your loved ones, a faith in God. The same word can be used for all these aspects in your life. The question for us today may not be how much faith we have, but how we live into the faith with God and each other.

Home Devotional Questions
  1. Where or in whom do you place your trust?
  2. When the going gets tough (the car didn’t start, a loved one let you down, you don’t hear God clearly), in what ways does your faith play a role?
