Pentecost 9 Preview

This week we encounter the story of Abraham and Sarah, a special visit from the Lord, and laughter that brings new life.

The Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh, and say, “Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?” Is anything too wonderful for the Lord?

-Genesis 18:13-14

On faith they left all they knew behind and ventured on untrodden paths. Years flew by and they waited still, until one day an unexpected visitor came to see them and a promise was renewed. Could they believe what their ears or simply laugh it off.

Every so often in our journey of faith the Lord  asks us a question:

Preaching Theme

“Can you hear me now?”

Home Devotion Questions

Today’s readings come from Genesis 18:1-15 and Luke 10:38-42.

The Lord’s grace to Abraham and Sarah is a resolution to a promise made years earlier. The Lord’s grace to Mary and Martha is a permission to be in the moment and receive God’s grace in meal and fellowship.

Where do you experience God’s grace?

How do you experience grace through promises made in confession and absolution (you are forgiven) or promises offered in bread and wine (this is my body and blood given to you for forgiveness and life)?

Is there a time you can recall when God showed up in your life? What happened? How were you effected? How does that time inform who you are today?
